As a student, I would like to be coached as I compose open-ended responses in my lab report if I am missing key terms that are graded.
Key words are loaded into a feedback engine, such as "error" where a discussion of these things are critical. If the student does not mention these terms in their response, then custom feedback will trigger telling them "An analysis of the error in your data is important. Make sure you include this in your response." You would have to have a way to look for terms and their synonyms or related words using an OR search, and the feedback if they are not found:
NOT ("error" OR "deviation") - "An analysis of the error in your data is important. Make sure you include this in your response."
It may be helpful to also look for terms/clauses and provide feedback is they ARE present.
"low yield" OR "yield was low" - "You mention low yield. Make sure to include what percent yield you were expecting and where in the procedure you think your loss was greatest and why."
This idea is in the same family as the idea where key words are loaded into a rubric for an open-ended student response entry and highlighted for grading.
